Korean melon

Tis’ the season for Korean melons aka Yellow melons aka Dua Gan.  Actually, it’s been the season for a few months now, but inspired by my kumquat experience, I decided to try a new fruit out that I hadn’t eaten before.

Korean melon or Yellow melon is how you might hear these be called in Asian markets back in the States.

I’ve been eyeing this fruit out for quite some time.  I wasn’t actually even sure it was a fruit.  At first glance, it sort of looks like some type of squash.  But a Korean friend told me it was a melon.

They are about the size of one really big russet potato or one small acorn squash.  I’m not sure if that’s even a helpful comparison.  Anyway, in terms of eating it, I treated it like a cantaloupe: cut it in half, scoop out the seeds, peel skin off with small knife.

It tastes really good.  It has a mild melon taste – similar to a Honeydew melon.  And the texture is much firmer…crunchier than melons I’d normally eat back home.  I sprinkled some li hing powder on it (people from Hawaii will know this stuff well) to add a bit more flavor.  Delish!

Fresh fruit here is SO cheap that it doesn’t hurt to just go out and try the unknown.  Can’t wait to see what else I can find.

You can eat the seeds by the way. The flesh around the seeds is very sweet.
